      • Upton Court was an historic manor house. At that time it was a magnificent residence in 51/2 acres with an entrance lodge, garage and outbuildings and a tennis court (see estate agents' sale particulars [copy held]. The author believes Ethel bought the house before her second marriage to Arthur Tickler.
        Although the agents' sale particulars state the sale was "at the direction of Mrs. Tickler", it seems the sale did not proceed as the author's father continued to live at the house for some time after his mother's death.

      • The marriage ended in divorce. Did Ethel know of Arthur Tickler's past? His first wife Kathleen (neĆ© Middleton) divorced him on the grounds of cruelty and adultery. The Times of 7 February 1923 reported the scandalous details including love letters from Lady Doughty read out in court. Kathleen was represented by one of the leading barristers of the day, Patrick Hastings KC. Tickler originally defended the divorce but in the event did not appear at the hearing. There were four children of the marriage; custody was granted to the wife.

      • The marriage certificate records that James Lewis Farmiloe was aged 23, a Merchant of 48 Fitzjohns Avenue, and his father was John Farmiloe, Merchant. Ethel Audrey Hart was aged 23 of Fitzjohns Avenue, father William Henry Hart, Stockbroker.
        The marriage was solemnised by John's cousin, William Thomas Farmiloe (qv). The witnesses were James' and Ethel's fathers.
        The James Lewis and Ethel Audrey stated in the marriage certificate are clearly the same couple as are recorded in the 1901 census living with their daughter Sybil.

      • James Lewis is listed as residing at Datchet Court, Datchet, Eton in the 1911 Census, along with wife Ethel Audrey and children Sybil and James Derrick (the author's father). Also resident or just visiting was William Henry Hart, Ethel's father. The servants living there included a cook, nurse and two maids.
        James Lewis' will made in 1922 still mentions Datchet Court as his residence.

      • The identity of Ethel Audrey Hart in the birth certificate as the same person in the certificate of marriage to James Lewis Farmiloe is confirmed by the name of her father William Henry Hart, stockbroker, given in both certificates, and her age 23 in the marriage certificate. In addition, Ethel appears with her parents in the 1881 and 1891 censuses.
