    • Notes  Married:
      • John is described as a Merchant in the Marriage certificate, and residing in the Parish of St.Margaret, Westminster. His bride Harriett Ann was resident in Burton on Trent (father Henry James Meakin, Farmer).

      Census:
      • The 1871 Census shows John (aged 31, Lead and Glass Merchant) living at 16 Park Road Villas with Harriet (31), Annie (2) and Henry (2 months). Their servants were Martha Stanley (53) and Emily Anson (16). Emily was from Burton on Trent and probably therefore known to Harriet's family. John's father George and his household lived next door at no.17 Park Road Villas.

Neighbours included older retired ladies and their households, a music teaching couple and a manufacturing chemist. At no.13 Park Road Villas, an Elizabeth Western (aged 25, a Widow and annuitant) was living with her daughter Florence (2), lodger William Blain and servant Rosetta Mays. Was she related to Ann Western, the sister of John's grandfather William?
      • John and Harriet (now 41) are living at 47 Parkhurst Road with Nora (6) and James Lewis (4). Their servants were Lucy Andrews (30) the Cook and Emma Brown (18) the Housemaid. His father George and his household lived next door at no. 45.
      • John (Glass and Lead Merchant, aged 50) was now living at 48 Fitzjohn's Avenue with Harriet (50) and James Lewis (14). There were also Lizzie Simmons the Cook (42) and the housemaids Ellen (34) and Lilly (24). Sybil was away.
Fitzjohn's Avenue was compared with Paris and was described by Harper's Magazine in 1883 as "one of the noblest streets in the world". Early inhabitants included Lloyds underwriters, shipowners, auctioneers, silk manufacturers, wine merchants. The street was popular with artists John Pettie (1839-1893) and Edwin Long (1829-1891).
